How do you say goodbye? August tends to be a time of goodbye for many students who are going to university for the first time and saying goodbye to family and friends they have known their entire lives, but it is not the only time in life where people cope with what it means to end well. While not often described as grief, separations due to adoption, leaving a job or church or moving to another city or country means leaving important relationships behind. In the movie “The Farewell”, a Chinese American family copes with the impending loss of a mother and grandmother back in China by returning to see her once more. It is a beautiful story, told by director Lulu Wang about how her own family coped with knowing that the matriarch of her family had cancer.
Our team of Christian antiracism educators and friends sit down to discuss the movie as part of our series “Antiracism in the Movies.”
