In the past few weeks, the Trump administration has sent large numbers of Immigration and Custom’s Enforcement agents to Minneapolis in response to charges of fraud among a small number of immigrants in the Somali community there. This was not a targeted action, but a massive undertaking arresting many people who were, and who were not, undocumented immigrants. A cascade of horrific events has been documented by people capturing ICE agents – many wearing masks to conceal their identities – committing questionable and at times heartbreaking acts. The pushback from protesters has been continual, and two American citizens were shot and killed so far by ICE agents, bringing a spotlight on Minneapolis and what many are considering to be tactics and policies of ICE officers that are going too far. What are God-fearing people to do in moments when the government is behaving in terrifying ways? Our team of Christian antiracism educators and friends talks about this question in today’s episode.
This is a part of our RILED series, an acronym we are using for our ongoing talks about what the Bible has to say about Racial Justice, Immigration, Leadership, Economic Justice and Diversity, during these challenging times.
