Have you ever been so moved by something in the news that you felt powerful emotions afterwards? In the age of social media and 24-7 news coverage, we may find that we have an overload of information that make us feel those emotions. But in the period leading up to the American Revolution, words similarly impacted people with talk of liberty. But who was being liberated from what? When it came to Black people in the colonies, did liberty and freedom apply to them as well? How did colonists, both Black and White, see scripture speaking into these issues… and what can we learn from the past that speaks to us in the present when it comes to confronting tyranny and injustice?
We will discuss these stories as part of our series discussing Jemar Tisby’s book The Spirit of Justice: True Stores of Faith, Race and Resistance. A link to purchase this book is provided in the show notes for this episode.
